How Safe is Medical Cannabis?

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), "From 1999 to 2017, almost 218,000 people died in the United States from overdoses related to prescription opioids. Overdose deaths involving prescription opioids were five times higher in 2017 than in 1999."   (CDC.gov)

This is what has been termed the "opioid epidemic" in America. This is over 12,000 deaths per year related to chronic pain prescriptions. Imagine FOUR September 11 terrorist attacks every year for the past 20 years. This level of human destruction is truly unthinkable. Even when properly used and prescribed, opioids have side side effects that range from constipation & addiction to personality changes & death.

In contrast, cannabis use for chronic pain poses almost no risk of death (except for driving or other unsafe actions while under the influence). And the side effects do not interfere with quality of life in a drastic way as do prescription opioids.

Some negative effects that have been reported from Cannabis use include:

  • Chronic cough & and potential respiratory infections.

  • Mental and cognitive issues, including problems with learning and memory, hallucinations, anxiety, panic attacks and psychosis, especially in youth.

  • Heavy & early use in teens has been shown to cause some problems with brain development.

Most of these effects are associated with recreational use of high THC marijuana. Responsible medical cannabis use in as low a doses as is effective usually produces very few unwanted side-effects.
